<h2>We need to be ready. </h2>Over the weekend, while we were celebrating our community through Utah Pride and small neighborhood celebrations, the federal government unlawfully deployed California's national guard to LA County to quell lawful protests against ICE enforcement. Right now, military troops are enroute to LA to be used against our own people for exercising their First Amendment rights. Everything about the federal government's response is unlawful. Governor Newsom has filed litigation, but in this moment, it appears the president is set on inflaming a peaceful protest and using the military to dramatically increase the likelihood of bloodshed in LA. You may be thinking ‘What does an ICE protest and military deployment in LA have to do with a local election in Salt Lake?’ But local leadership decisions to litigate with every lawful response available, fighting against militarized law enforcement, listening to the voices of those whose family are no longer here because of the federal government, and then doing something locally about our jails, our local law enforcement, and our prosecution tactics all fall within the County Council’s purview. If you think LA cannot happen here, in Salt Lake County, think about everything you know about this president. Restraint is not his personality.As this rapid election comes to a close, almost as soon as it has begun, I hope you will vote for me. By now you know where my heart is, what my dedication and experience is to provide leadership in times of normalcy to address the urgent needs of the unhoused, and revitalization of District 1. Fighting for your future, for your rights, is in my DNA. We need leadership that is ready for the unknown and ready to stand up and use their voice to stridently fight for what District 1 stands for. When you vote tomorrow, please, vote for me.

I'm proud to have grown up in our local public schools at Northwest Middle School, West High, and the University of Utah. I was politically active as a student, which included serving as the Young Democrats of Utah President and working for the Utah Democratic Party in college.</h3>After graduating from the George Washington University School of Law, I worked in D.C. and volunteered for the DNC's voter protection efforts, worked with the Federal Election Commission, and most recently, served as legal counsel for the Salt Lake County Democratic Party. Importantly, as a lawyer with Black and Japanese heritage, I understand the importance of representation and fair dealing in our communities. To that end, I've served my community as the President of the Utah Minority Bar Association and as an officer of the LGBT and Allied Lawyers of Utah. As a public defender I fight for every person's constitutional rights to be treated fairly under the law, and I bring that same advocacy to the Salt Lake County Council.Since being elected to represent District 1 on the Salt Lake County Council in June, I have worked tirelessly for our community. I'm honored that my colleagues have selected me to lead the Democratic Caucus in 2026, a responsibility I take seriously as we work together to move Salt Lake County forward.I will continue to use my background and experience to improve the criminal justice system, advocate for environmental stewardship, and serve Salt Lake County on your behalf in District 1.

Real talk, I became a lawyer because when I was a teenager a police officer unlawfully stopped me and profiled me. I fought that small injustice but it gave me my first experience fighting for equity under the law. Today the stakes are greater, I fight for peoples lives who are trapped in the criminal justice system and everyday I fight for constitutional rights that are sacred to all of us.America is facing an unprecedented challenge in our judicial system. We are living in a world where the other party normalizes mistreatment and inequity based on who you love, who you are, whether you were born here. This is wrong. The Salt Lake County Council needs a leader who understands this at their core and someone who understands how to fight back. We need someone who knows the laws to uphold the laws, and I have been doing that for over a decade here in Salt Lake County's courts and will do so on the Council.

America is facing an unprecedented attack on our beliefs in diversity, fairness, and equality. We need strong and experienced leadership moving forward. Every day I fight in our court system for progressive ideals and the belief that our rights don't change based on who you are.

Utah is one of the fastest growing states in the country, and Salt Lake County lies at the heart of that growth. If you look across District 1 you have no doubt seen high rise apartments where five years ago there was nothing. The problem is those high rises are not affordable for your average resident. In fact, they are locked to most of us in the same way that living in most parts of District 1 is unattainable to new families and residents. Salt Lake County has to play a hand in helping reverse this trend by incentivizing affordable and desirable housing throughout District 1 so that as the county grows, so to do our businesses and the core of what makes us Salt Lake; it's people.

Utah is one of the fastest growing states in the country, and Salt Lake County lies at the heart of that growth. We need people who know Salt Lake to guide it forward and keep our communities together.

Sustainable Growth

We all deserve to breathe clean air, drink fresh water, and enjoy the public land of the great state of Utah. Those are basic rights that must be defended, and I will fight for those rights everyday. The county is unique in that ZAP funding helps support great third spaces such as the county library system, Clark Planetarium, Hogle Zoo, and many rec centers. I want to direct county funding to boost ZAP so our residents can continue to enjoy these spaces for generations to come and we can make more spaces for residents to enjoy what our County has to offer.Aside from ZAP our canyons are a treasure, the envy of many around the world when they visit Salt Lake County. We have to preserve their charm and protect them for the future so they can be enjoyed in the future for each new generation.We also need to implement policies and use Salt Lake County's tax incentives to green our economy in ways that businesses will want to buy into. I believe that Salt Lake County should use its bargaining power to incentivize solar power generation and other green initiatives to ultimately help fight the dreaded inversion and make the air cleaner for our children to breathe.I believe environmental leadership demands advocacy that reaches beyond the County Council.. Salt Lake County deserves a leader who will work with our legislative delegation to show how state-wide environmental policies are harming the people who live in our county. For example, even though the Great Salt Lake isn't part of the county's governance how it is used dramatically affects the snow on our canyons and spaces we enjoy. I am the kind of leader who will advocate on these kinds of issues to our state leaders so we can see progress for Salt Lake County.

We all deserve to breathe clean air, drink fresh water, and enjoy the public land of the great state of Utah. Those are basic rights that must be defended, because ultimately we all want a future where the next generation can enjoy the mountains and natural treasures this county has to offer.

With rapid growth throughout the county we have experienced a sudden increase in homelessness and individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use issues and worse. Right now Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City are spending tremendous amounts of money on accountability which means more police, more jails, and punishing the homeless for their dire circumstances. This ineffective solution largely ends up being resolved in the criminal justice system, a system that is ill-equipped to handle this and far too often works to break peoples lives further than it does to address the many issues that result in homelessness. It's also incredibly expensive.Real criminal justice reform requires someone who understands the criminal justice system and has worked on the frontline of that system. As a public defender, I've spent a decade helping our worst off residents out of the criminal justice system and into housing, into substance use treatment, and into effective mental health programming.We cannot jail our way out of this problem, especially as we continue to grow as a community. Together we can address homelessness head on while compassionately helping people avoid the criminal justice system and get them out of that system.

Sometimes, you do need a lawyer. With my experience fighting legal battles for the most vulnerable in our community, I know what we need to do to build a better future for Salt Lake County that isn't just building more jails and criminalizing homelessness.
